Los Norte Americanos - Tijuana Beatles

I have a fascination for the influx of Latin music in the 1960s. I have quite a few records which embrace this new feel which came over to the UK with the advent of long haul flights and the start of the world getting smaller. These new rhythms really affected people and in a rush to acommodate the public's desire for this strange new sound not only did Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass make big but many albums took existing well known tunes and Tijuana'd them up. This is how oddities like this came to be, Tijuana Beatles. Yes, The Beatles, Latin brass style. Produced by the famous Jack Dorsey this album contains both Lennon/McCartney and original compositions. In fact half the album is original but what better way to sell your record than a cute girl and some Beatles tunes? One last thing, we've already learned that Nico Gomez was actually a Belgian chap, how Latin are M. Huckbridge and A. Sherman I wonder? Anyhoo, blurb time:

"Whatever the musical mood may be you can rely on the Tijuana Sound to add that something extra- and in this case  the extra enjoyment comes through teaming Beatle songs with Tijuana treatment. 

It's a happy musical marriage that just can't fail. The Beatles after all write great songs and the musicians who create the Tijuana sound are equally great at interpreting them in their own stylised fashion.
So far as material is concerned the tracks range far and wide over Beatle songs that have soared into hit parade charts all over the world. From one of the earliest-"All My Loving" right through to "Get Back""Ballad Of John And Yoko" and their very latest hit "Something".

Beatles apart there are a couple of original compositions specially written to explore the musical magic of Tijuana, the sound that has become a world-wide favourite. One thing's for certain; whether you're Beatle fan or Tijuana fan your ears and senses are in line for the kind of musical treat you'll want to repeat."

Dixieland Way - Sid Phillips Band

In America, as well as Europe, the name Sid Phillips automatically ties up with King Of Clarinet. This title was bestowed upon him by American music critics during a series of broadcasts on the C.B.S. Network in New York some years ago. Now, more than ever, this distinction is obviously merited. One has only to hear a few phrases and Sid's virtuosity and position in front of the world's great clarinet players are unmistakable.

"Here they go again- one of the most remarkable phenomena to appear on the British show business scene for many, many years - the Black and White Minstrels! What makes them so remarkable - indeed unique? Well, in the first instance, it is incredible that a minstrel show should have taken this country by storm in an age when this form of entertainment was generally considered a relic of the past. It has been suggested by a few cynics that black faced minstrels are out of place in these days of more enlightened attitudes towards the coloured races - but this theory presupposes that the minstrel show is detrimental or derogatory to coloured folk, and certainly The Black and White Minstrels cannot be accused of any such approach. Anyone who is looking for political overtones in a situation such as this must, I feel, be deliberately striving to provoke trouble - and, happily, such complaints are restricted to a meagre few."

There's something magical about this album cover, I love the mise-en-scene, from the coffee table to the lampshade, the ashtray to the birdcage, not to mention her outfit! Anyway, here's what they say. . . .

This album has been designed simply and solely as a showcase - a shop window for a most interesting and attractive series of specifically designed and recorded LPs.

The wide variety of sounds and moods are a cross-section of the albums currently available in Mercury's Super Stereo catalogue. In selecting a track from each of a dozen LPs we hope to invite you to delve further into the particular long-player - and in so doing discover some of the finest selesctions on record today.

Obviously different studio and recording techniques were used in the production of the various types of orchestras - so no general description of studio layout or microphone placement would apply, but for the most part, all the recordings, whether originating in Britain, on the Continent or in America have been mixed throuh a twenty channel console, equalised, controlled and reduced from multi-track tape or magnetic film to two channel stereo, quality checked at every stage.

Before the conquest of South America in the 16th century there were large highly developed civilisations where Brazil and Mexico now lie. Their customs and cultures were quite different from those of the Spanish who conquered them and who subsequently imposed their own customs. The Spanish also brought negro slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. The musical sum of these conflicting influences is the unmistakeable sound of Latin American music, depending largely on it's intricate cross rhythms and strong syncopations for it's uniqueness. In fact, Edmundo Ross, one of the first men to introduce the music of Latin America to this country insists that "The melody section is unimportant. It can still be effective played on a broken down piano so long as the rhythm section is strong."

The first of the Latin dances to become popular was the Tango, which swept the world just prior to World War One. But it was when the Rhumba arrived in the ballroom straight from it's native Cuba in the early 1930s that Latin-American music and rhythms became firmly entrenched as international favourites. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced 'The Carioca', from Brazil came Carmen Miranda, the Brazillian Bombshell, and with her came The Samba. The Conga established itself as a favourite party dance.

Latin American orchestras flourished, Xavier Cugal, Roberto Inglez, The Lecuona Cuban Boys and then, in the 1950s, along came the great Perez Prado who added to the standard Latin American instrumentation a biting brass section that was strongly influenced by the swing bands of the U.S.A. From this combination came the Mambo and the irresistable Cha-Cha-Cha.

This is the sort of sound you will hear in this album - all the wild heat and tingling excitement of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White", "Patricia", "Mambo Jambo" and many other favourites captured in vivid stereo. If thid doesn't get you, you'd better reserve your place in the cemetary before it's too late!
