Advent Calendar - 23rd December

Wow, December's nearly gone already! I hope your shopping is done and your presents are wrapped. If not there's still  tomorrow. In the meantime here's James Brown with 'Go Power At Christmas'. See you tomorrow for the last one!

Advent Calendar - 22nd December

I really don't know what's happening to Blogger, everything keeps changing and it's nowhere near as good. Anyway, today I bring you a substitution. It should have been me but the cold I've had for the past week has left me unable to record a vocal track. What I have chosen instead is a song I heard performed beautifully by The Luton Youth  Cantores on Saturday, even though their own version is not available. I did not know it and it reminds me of something, but it's great anyway. It's also being used by the BBC to advertise their Dickens transcription so it's all over TV. Seems I'm late to the party. Talking of late, busy day, James Taylor Quartet, signed CD and yes, midnight has passed. Just enjoy. . . .

Advent Calendar - December 21st

So I was watching Michael Bublé's Christmas rundown on 4Music and he chose this which I actually like. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christina fan, I just don't listen to her very often. I'm sure the video is cheesy enough for here too "Look what I got Mommy. . . " (Slap).

Sunday 18 December 2011

Advent Calendar - 18th December

Growing up there were two albums that came back each year courtesy of my grandparents - The Elvis Christmas Album and Jim Reeves 12 Songs Of Christmas. Unless it was Jingle Bells or little Donkey I didn't care but to revisit these albums as a grown man I bring you today, one week before the big day, Jim Reeves with 'An Old Christmas Card'.

Saturday 17 December 2011

Advent Calendar - 17th December

It's the seventeenth now and just a week from Christmas Eve and today I bring You The Raveonettes with 'Come On Santa'.

Friday 16 December 2011

Advent Calender - 16th December

Here we are and with snow on the ground (and in the air) it's time to check out these Ladies and Gents winter fashions!

Thursday 15 December 2011

Advent Calender - 15th December

Today's kitsch treat is Milton DeLugg's 'Hooray For Santa Claus' from the film 'Santa Claus Conquers The Martians'. The song is VERY kitsch but remains one of the best things about an otherwise disappointing film given it's title!

Oh, and the way they sing 'Santy Claus' yet spell 'S-A-N-T-A' really confuzzled me when I watched the film!

Advent Calender - 14th December

Best 'bored girl vocal' band of all time, today I give you The Waitresses and their tale of love and the magic of Christmas. No, really!!

Tuesday 13 December 2011

Advent Calender - 13th December

Day thirteen of the festive countdown and here's Adam Faith. We don't make 'em like this any more!

Advent Calender - 12th December

Sorry, I missed a day. I had a really long day at work and have the worst cold, but now two days off to recover with some warm honey & Lemon drinks. My voicebox may have crawled up and away but I can still type!

Back on track this is yesterday's delight, over to you Bob. . .

NB: presenter's name may not be Bob. Thank you

Sunday 11 December 2011

Advent Calender - 11th December

It's the 11th December so Christmas is just two weeks away!! So for this Sunday morning it's time to dance with Debbie and The Darnells from 1962.

Saturday 10 December 2011

Advent Calender - 10th December

Into double figures and today's treat is courtesy of last year's It's A Goldie Lookin Christmas (The fairy tale of Newport). I loved their boy band pastiches and this is just as good as 'You Knows I Love You' or 'R 'n' B'!

Safe.

You knows it.

Advent Calender - 7th December

The first week of December comes to a close, have you done your shopping yet? Today's offering is Lady GaGa with the very rude (but not explcit) Christmas Tree featuring Space Cowboy.

I can't find any real video but this 'miniplanet'(?) one is cute and has the words.

Cover above is by "Other Covers" on Deviant Art. Thank You.

Advent Calender - 3rd December

Advent Calender - 2nd December

Take three lovely ladies with beautiful voices, sprinkle in some drums and a whole load of Christmas and what have you got?

Day 2!!

Advent Calender - !st December

Yes, I'm late, but have you seen all these 'celebrities' doing musical advent calendars on Spotify and the like? Pixie Lott (yes, I'm watching hers), Primal Scream (I shall look at theirs too) Maroon 5 (really?), Michael Bublé, etc and they're all so . . . ordinary.

So here's my festive countdown which will be available to stream on mixcloud from 23rd and up first: Glee. I first heard this last year and loved it's high camp and energy. I never got into the show itself, or even the other records, but this Christmas album is a kitsch classic!

Friday 2 December 2011

Under The Christmas Star

Those clever, clever marketing people at Stella Artois have done it again! This FREE album of very kitsch Christmas tunes is avilable on their website here!

Ok, you'll have to like them on facebook if you have such a thing but once you hear the first track you'll love them anyway. Now go get it and enjoy!

Now That's What I Call Free

Here's something new from me, I've found so much free music on the internet I can't believe people illegally download! So starting here I will do occasional podcasts featuring what I think are the best free tracks out there. You can download and keep any of these yourself and I'll link the track listings. This first one is predominantly alternative but mostly I'll be mixing genres. So here we go:

1. Remember Remember - Get Good a band I first heard on a Mogcast and fell in love with. Having bought their first e.p. and album I found this on RCRD LBL and just had to share it with you too!

2. The Happy Hollows - Bird Of Prey I know nothing about these but I like this song.

3. Bombay Bicycle Club - Lamplight B.B.C. have been creating a buzz for some time now so here they are.

4. Black Moth Super Rainbow - Born On A Day The Sun Didn't Rise "I've got the big beat" - Amazing piece of psychedelia from this Pittsburgh band.

5. Best Coast - Boyfriend Another band that seem to be getting plenty of press, try this little number from L.A.

6. Tokyo Sex Destruction - Break-Out Town Noise rock and fun from a group with a great name!

7. Diamond Doves - Club Night Back to the beats from N.Y.

8. Still Corners - Cuckoo I was on the SubPop website and saw the video for this song and fell in love. Check RCRD LBL for more from this greeat London based band and I'll see you at the album launch party!

9. The Blacks - Raincoat Picking the pace and giving some attitude.

10. Grand Pocket Orchestra - Chongo Pop A bit of fun, nothing more.

11. Dananananackroyd - Chrome Rainbow Great riff and handclaps, probably would've had different vocals myself but still lots to enjoy.

12. Finally Punk- Negative Creep "I am not Kurt Cobain" but this is Nirvana!

13. Razika - Taste My Dream More sing-a-long stuff and happy guitars.

14. La Femme - Sur La Planche From Paris we have up-beat cute vocals and surfboard guitars, but it works (for me)!

15. Dum Dum Girls - Jail La La I was doing a space themed party mix and found a track by The Dum Dum Girls. I liked it and their star has been rising. Also on Sub Pop there's more available free on their site.

16. Rikslyd - Am I sexy? You might think Hip Hop at first but once this Paris based Norwegian starts 'rapping' you'll see wht it's here!

17. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Young Adult Friction Another band gaining press, and with a name like that how could I ever not like these native New Yorkers.

18. The Octopus Project - Wet Gold Dreamy and uptempo together? Oh yes.

19. Atari Teenage Riot - Blood In My Eyes From the late '90s, German electro rock.

20. Trwbador - Sun In Winter You'll find this in Owlet Musics free stuff with two other singles. I also recommend the sampler which is so cheap and there's some good stuff on there!

21. Mogwai - Rano Pano It seems this has been removed but one of my all time favourite bands and there's two songs here for you to try, one from the last album and one from the first (if you accept Ten Rapid as an E.P. collection).

22. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - The Copper Top (Edit) I can't find the site I got this from, but this one let's you download it too. I just bought the album. One day I'll play 'Glasgow Jubilee' and freak everyone out!!

Wednesday 10 August 2011

Tickets are bought!!! I'm going on Saturday if anyone's there. Should be fun.
